Brazos River, Kopperl Texas[/b]
Settled along the Brazos River, the first ever Texas Wakesurf Championships was held on Saturday, June 21st 2008. Competitors came from across these great United States to vie for their title; spectators came to just enjoy the sun and watch, as the competitors would put on a memorable show. The weather held out both Friday, practice day and Saturday, competition day. Calm winds and high degrees made it for a “HOT” Texas day both from the riders’ tricks and the temperature.
Indian Lodge was the location and a special thanks to the event hosts, Tim and Barb for ensuring that the layout would provide optimal viewing from shore but calm waters as well. The spectators would also be blown away by the true Texas BBQ talents of Texas local, Darrell Robichaux. Serving everything from pulled pork, brisket, sausage to down home potato salad and beans few would be hungry throughout the day.
The Wake Outlaw Twins, SV240 Enzos Centurions were in full effect; sacked out to give the sickest wake a wakesurfer has seen. These Centurion Towboats proudly displayed Wake Outlaws commitment to wakesurfing. As the day of the event arrived, competitors had completed the practice runs and each anticipated their individual rides. With 45 second pass in each direction, the runs had to be well choreographed to display their skills to the judges.
What is to be said for the riding? It was nothing less than spectacular. It was a great opportunity for the amateurs and those new to wake surfing to see what their potential could be in the sport. Riders ranged from new amateurs to well-known competitors that are a regular fixture at the Worlds and other National competitions. Everything from shuvs, 1080, Air reverse, and backside 3’s were pulled off leaving spectators in awe.
Sponsors would display their commitment to get behind the ever-growing sport with wakesurfers from The Walker Project, Inland Surfer, Triple X and Phase 5. Clothing packages for first place contenders would be courtesy of Under Ground Products (UGP). Raffles would see spectators be able to win everything from wakesurf boards, to Wet Sounds, to Helium, Cobian, Centurion and Anarchy clothing packages. All in all, no one would leave empty handed!
As the day turned to night, Wake Outlaws would award the competitors, announce the Walker Project Team Rider Search Winners and runner-ups, award the Charity Backyard Board build-off for Best Artwork and Best in Show. Day turned to night and the event was closed out in true Outlaw fashion with the band, Full Service gifting the audience with their music atop a huge flat bed. It surely was a sight to see, lit up by bonfire, the sounds of surfing would come thru the Reggae Rock of the Texas Wakesurf Championships after party.

Jasset Wins Again
Congratulations to X-TRAK team rider Jasset Umbel on her double victory at the Reef/Sweetwater ProAm!

The 4th Annual Reef Sweetwater Pro Am Surf Fest is in the history books now as one of the best surfing events on the East Coast. Thanks to Hurricane Bertha stalling off the East Coast, this year's event was blessed with some of the best surf ever for a pro-am event in North Carolina. For 3 solid days, waves ranged from waist-chest high with some solid bigger sets in the head high plus range. With over 300 contestants combined in the event, there was no shortage of excitement and and great surfing. Spectators were in the thousands with roars of applause during all divisions of the event.
The pro division was packed again this year with 96 surfers from around the world competing for the $20,000 prize purse. There were a few upsets and the long period swell made it a must to surf smart and pick the better waves that lined up for the higher scores. Last year's Champion Asher Nolan was stopped short in the quarterfinals this year. In the end there were four surfers left fighting for the $5000 first place check. Jeremy Johnston from Florida was crowned the 2008 Reef Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest Champion with lightning quick turns and some big airs in the final. Behind him respectively were Nick Rosza (CA) in second, Aaron Cormican (FL) in third, and Lucas Rogers (VA) in fourth.
In the guys amateur divisions, the usual suspects and rippers were present and the finals showcased some solid talent of future pros. In the Guys Open Longboard division, Tony Silvagni from North Carolina took the crown. In the Guys 14-Under division, Michael Ciaramella from New Jersey was the standout winner. The action packed 15-Over division was not short of action either with persistent and consistent Owen Moffet from North Carolina taking the gold.
In the girls amateur divisions, there were some familiar faces again this year. In the Girls Open Longboard Division, Kate Easton from Virginia took first this year. Jasset Umbel from Florida took gold in the Girls 17-Under and surfed up an group to win the 18-Over division as well.
Overall, the contest couldn't have gone any better with waves, weather, staff, surfers, and spectators. It was comforting to know that after the event on Saturday afternoon, a handfull of surfers saved the lives of several swimmers caught in a bad rip current. I have no doubt that lives would have been lost if it were'nt for the quick reaction of surfers that used their ocean knowledge to help those in distress.
A huge thanks to all the sponsors, staff, and volunteers that made this event possible. We hope to see everyone again next year even bigger and better.

South bound and down
Tyler is ripping his way down the East coast. Here are a few photos of some shops he's stopped in at. I hear he's even getting a little surf along the way. Get back to work T!
