Ryan Croteau Wins Volcom’s Starfish in Newport

Ryan Croteau took down the junior division at Volcom’s Starfish Surf Series held in chest high surf at the river jetties in Newport Beach. He walked away with a bunch of swag and a cool $250. Yeah Ryan!

MATT PAGAN - Interview With LAT34

Matt Pagan's Magical World from Mike Pagan on Vimeo.

In an industry where IMAGE IS EVERYTHING, your name is as crucial as how fresh your style is.  The way you present yourself must strike a nerve with all senses.
1.    Are you physically APPEALING?
2.    Do you sound GOOD?
3.    When you are riding, do you have that special TOUCH?
4.    Kind of weird, but do you SMELL good?
5.    We can leave taste out of it.
With all these criteria, do you think that if Tony Hawk’s name was actually, Joey Joe Joe Jr. Shabadoo, would companies give him the time of day, thus allowing his career to flourish?  Some how I don’t really think so.  I hate to admit it, but sometimes you must judge a book by its COVER.  That’s why when you are brought into this world with such a blessing, you must take the hand dealt to you and run with it.
MATT PAGAN is a young man has who has no limits as to what he can accomplish.  Matt was cool enough to take the time for a little interview with Lat34.  Find out where you might be able to find Matt jogging down the beach oiled up in a Speedo.
Lat34: What’s your name?
Pagan: Matt Pagan
L: How old are you?
P: 21 years young
L: Where are you from?
P: Westchester, CA. It’s a small town in the Los Angeles area, 5 min. from the beach
L: You are from the same ‘hood as my hero, Quentin Tarantino; What is your favorite Tarantino film and why?
P: Ya I spend a lot of time hanging out and surfing in that area. He’s definitely unique and that’s what I like about his films. My favorite would have to be Pulp Fiction. There’s so much action and you never know what to expect.
L: Also read you spend part of the year in Hawaii, do you ever oil yourself up and jog down tourist beaches just to make the male tourists jealous? Because I would totally do that.
P: Actually I’m over here right now and the swell is so big, it washing out most of the NorthShore. So, I was thinking about cruising down to Pipe, jogging to Sunset beach in my speedo oiled up with Hawaiian Tropic. Nah, but I’ve been spending the winter here for the past 3 years and I love it! The waves here are really fun and the lifestyle is awesome.
L: What bands’ music gets you pumped to surf (btw your name is pretty metal, Matt PAGAN)?
P: I know, people misspell my name all the time and I think it’s because they’re afraid to spell it the way it is. But it’s all good, I’m stoked on it. I not too into metal. I mean it can get me psyched sometimes but being from Los Angeles, hip hop is what really gets me pumped. I also like punk bands too, like Pennywise.
L: I have a blind date with a chick I met on craigslist, she says she is totally hot and a TV (what ever that means), I’m kinda nervous, any dating tips?
P: Well you might want to clear up what a “TV” is because it could mean she’s a guy (Transvestite). Or she could be really hot and a TV Star and you’re psyched! Just be yourself and if she’s into that, you’re golden!
L: Where is your favorite surf spot?
P: Trestles for California. Internationally, the MentawaiIslands in Indonesia.
L: Have you ever thought about surfing in a mesh tank top and biker shorts to help with range of motion and flexibility?
P: No, but I think about surfing naked all the time, you can’t have any better range of motion than that. Getting a naked barrel shot is number one on my bucket list.
L: Any tips for folks that are new to surfing?
P: Just have fun. You’re out in the ocean and riding a mass of moving water, life is good. Getting barreled is probably one of the best feelings too.
L: Any shout outs?
P: To my lady, cause she’s the best (she’s right here…). Also to my Dad and my Mom, family, friends, sponsors, Brandon Richards, and Lat34!
