Jasset Umbel In Inspired Magazine

X-Trak's Jasset Umbel is featured in this month's Inspired Magazine as their "Inspired Of The Month"! Can't think of anyone more deserving.

INSPIRER OF THE MONTH: JASSET UMBEL

Jasset is an eighteen year old pro surfer from Melbourne Beach, Florida. She started surfing at age five, with the assistance of her father holding her ankles while she rode the waves. At age eleven she started riding a short board and became hooked. Since then she has achieved a long list of accomplishments with her favorite hobby, including:

2011 & 2010 USA Surf Team
2011 3rd place USA Surfing Championship - lower trestles
2011 1st place Surfing America Prime - steamer lane
2011 3rd place Corona Women's Pro
2011 1st place NSSA Explorer Women's 

She says, "Now surfing is my job, but it's not really a job since it's so much fun." When I asked her why she loves surfing so much, she replied, "I love surfing because every time I'm out there I just feel so happy. It's just a lot of fun. It makes you feel so good after you ride a wave. Even when I'm having a bad day I know if I go surfing I'll come in smiling! It just makes you feel good to be out in the ocean living that lifestyle!" 

When I asked her where she sees herself in five years, she said, "Hopefully I'll be living on an island somewhere or on some boat sailing around the world- just surfing, enjoying life, and having fun."

Jasset's number one piece of advice to anyone looking to become a better surfer, "Never give up! Never stop trying! And always have fun doing it because once you stop having fun it won't mean anything anymore."

If only everyone could have the same beautiful outlook on life as her!

July 29 – The Trestles area responds differently to each swell. While Lowers can seem like top-to-bottom paradise, some swell directions call for a more lateral approach. East Coasters Come Up Short For Titles At Surfing America Quiksilver U.S.A. Champs, But Still Kick Some Butt And Take Some Names

Last year, four East Coasters hoisted 1st-place trophies atop the podium at the Surfing America U.S.A. Championships. But in 2011, once the newly minted Quiksilver U.S.A. Championships wrapped up in absolutely fabulous head-high Lower Trestles conditions on June 25th, not a single Rightsider had claimed victory. Of course, Cali-kids Kolohe Andino, Parker Coffin, and John Mel, along with Hawaiians Seth Moniz, Tatiana Weston Webb, Mahina Maeda, and Meah Collins stole the main headlines. But that doesn’t mean the East Coast’s male and female representatives didn’t still show up and blow up to the best of their abilities. In marquee youth competition, Melbourne Beach, FL’s, Jasset Umbel finished 3rd in Girls Under 18, while Garden City Beach, SC’s, Cam Richards also finished 3rd in Boys Under 16. Meanwhile, Indialantic, FL’s, Nikki Viesins earned a 4th-place trophy in Girls Under 16 and Pawleys Island, SC’s, Luke Gordon finished 4th in Boys Under 12.

In longboard and adult divisions, the East Coast didn’t notch a single shortboard finalist. But Cocoa Beach, FL’s, Steve McLean finished 3rd in Junior Longboard, while Texas standout Cody Canzoneri logged an impressive 2nd-place in Men’s Longboard and fellow Lone Star representative Albert Shannon finished 4th in Senior Longboard. Other impressive performances were put forth by Central Florida’s Emily Ruppert, who made the semifinals of Girls Under 16; South Florida’s Izzy Gomez, who made the semifinals of Girls Under 12; North Carolina’s Stevie Pittman, who made the quarterfinals of Boys Under 12; New Jersey’s Maddie Peterson and South Carolina’s Katie Gordon and Emory McClary, who made the quarterfinals of Girls Under 14; New York’s Quincy Davis, who made the quarterfinals of Girls Under 18; North Florida’s Keto Burns and New Jersey’s Mike Ciaramella, who made the quarterfinals of Boys Under 18; and Corey Howell and Noah Schweizer, who made Round Two of Boys Under 16.

Big congratulations to X-Trak team rider Jasset Umbel who finished 3rd in under 18 at the Quiksilver 2011 USA Championships!

Jasset Umbel - Surfing America Prime Series

Last weekend the Surfing America Prime Series hit Upper Trestles and got some pristine conditions for the kids to unload in.

Florida's Jasset Umbel put up a good showing with a second place finish in the Girls U18.
Jasset Umbel won her Quarter and Semi final heats and was leading the Girls U18 Final with just under a minute remaining….when 4th place surfer Kulia Doherty grab a wave in the final seconds that scored in the excellent range allowing her to jump up to 1st for the victory.

Jasset wins Surfing America Prime Santa Cruz

Surfing America's Prime Steamer Lane event went down last weekend in some classic Lane conditions. Derek Peters and Jasset Umbel came out on top. Check out the photos, results, and video highlights from last weekend at good Steamer Lane.

Jan. 19, 2011 - Steamer Lane, the 4th stop of the Surfing America Prime West Series
The waves were firing in Northern California. Perfect conditions at famed Steamer Lane for the 4th stop of the Surfing America Prime West Series. It is the only true series for under 18 surfers. The Lane has played host every year since 1968. In the Under 18 Boys division Derek Peters would work this right, racking up enough points for the win. Boys under 16 was up next and the waves were beginning to pick up. Jacob Kelly took advantage of the improving conditions and took the top spot. In the Girls under 18 division, it was the Jasset Umbel show, and she surfed her way to the top of the podium. Then finally, in the girls under 16, Kulia Dougherty had to fight off some serious competition, but delivered the scores to take the title. The next stop for the series will be at Trestles, in Southern California on Feb 6th and 7th.
